What is RAG? AI that answers from your own documents, explained simply

TL;DR

RAG means giving AI your own documents so it answers from them, not from guesswork. It finds the relevant passages first, then writes the answer and shows you where it came from — so you get reliable, source-backed replies instead of confident-sounding made-up ones.

If you've used ChatGPT, you've probably seen it answer confidently — and sometimes get it wrong. That's because a plain chatbot answers from memory, not from *your* facts.

The simple idea behind RAG

RAG stands for "retrieval-augmented generation". Skip the jargon and it means one thing: let the AI read your documents first, then answer.

Think of a new colleague. Ask them about your refund policy on day one and they'll guess. Give them the handbook first and they'll answer correctly — and point to the page. RAG is giving the AI the handbook.

How it works, in three steps

  • You add your documents — contracts, manuals, spreadsheets, policies.
  • The AI finds the relevant part — when you ask, it searches your documents for the passages that matter.
  • It answers with the source — you get a plain-language answer and a link to the exact document and page.

Why it matters

Two things change. First, the answers are about *your* business, not the internet's average. Second, you can check them — every answer shows where it came from, so you're never trusting a black box.

The point of RAG isn't smarter AI. It's *trustworthy* AI — answers you can verify.

See it for yourself

Corpilus Studio is RAG over your own files. Try the idea in 30 seconds on the Studio demo — ask three sample documents a question and watch the citation appear.
